Oxana Malevanik

My recent work “Love is stronger than fear” is my reflection on the current political situation in Russia. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, 44, returned home from Germany in January, 2021 where he was receiving treatment after being poisoned with a nerve agent in Siberia in August, 2020. He was immediately taken into custody and given a jail sentence shortly after. The conviction was widely seen as politically motivated. My work "Love is stronger than fear" was born as a result of how incredibly moved I was by the courage of Navalny’s wife, Yulia.

"Society of clean plates. Tea Party 16+". I invite my guests to a tea party in the fancy 360* panoramic view space of the former bridge watchers house, now the "SWEETS hotel". Tea is served with a variety of desserts on my sexy service called the "Society of clean plates". The name of the service “Society of clean plates” comes from a children’s book, “Lenin and the children”, by Soviet writer Bonch-Bruevich Mikhail Dmitrievich. This is a humorous ode to my strict puritan childhood in Soviet Russia, where everything was politicised to the point of absurdity. Sexuality had no right to be at all. So, please, eat all the SWEETS from my plates. You can even lick them up and join my Society!

Visual artist Oxana Malevanik uses porcelain as a canvas. Her first service, “Stripservice. Book on porcelain,” was made on the basis of quick sketches that her psychologist asked her to draw when treating her for the post-traumatic syndrome she was diagnosed with in 2011. The idea of a family service grew into a performance dinner. The second service, "The Society of Clean Plates", arose as a continuation of the theme of the maturation of a child, in this case, her sexuality. Her message is: sexuality must stop being a social taboo, a cause of fear and abuse. It’s the dessert of life. Curator Suzanne Oxenaar. Photo's by Andrei Tchernikov.
