Lambert & Fils is a design studio specializing in handmade lighting, founded by Samuel Lambert and based in Montreal, Canada. One of Canada’s most energized hubs for collaborative design, the studio has created installations around the world.
Through original contemporary collections and collaborations with international designers, Lambert & Fils investigates the many shapes of light — meditating on voids, volumes and the collective memory of materials. Preserving the bond between design and making, all lighting is conceived, designed and hand-assembled in the downtown Montreal atelier.
“We strive to create and build useful objects which are also poetic and meaningful, in an exploratory spirit, but with a solid collaborative, ethical and human-scaled approach.” explains Lambert.
Extending their abilities beyond the scope of their catalog, the Lambert & Fils bespoke department has provided original design to a multitude of spaces, from hotels to the likes of The Four Seasons, to office spaces such as Google Headquarters, DropBox and Slack, as well as institutional spaces like Penn One.
Exposed at Glue are models from Lambert & Fils’ latest collection, Silo.
The new modular lighting collection inhabits many worlds at once. Made using cut-out pieces of a 10’ custom aluminum extrusions, the vertical light creates a theatrical yet sleek composition.
Named after the historic grain silos lining Montreal’s Old Port, the collection takes cues from brutalist architecture, recalling visions of concrete towers, cityscapes, and wind chimes.
As compelling turned off as when illuminated, Silo plays with negative space and reflection to magnify its surroundings, all while retaining exquisite simplicity. The collection reinterprets an age-old manufacturing process, uniting light and material to spark something larger than their single form.
Featuring three new finishes – mirrored polished aluminum, tumbled aluminum, and glossy oxblood – and held up by aircraft wires, Silo is at once weightless and commanding. The collection also introduces a new cumin coloured wire – meant to replicate the soft materiality of leather as an unexpected juxtaposition to the Silo’s aluminum body.
